The problem

Hard water is costing you more than you think

Hard water scaling on pipe fittings and household appliances

The hard water problem

Hard water causes:

  • Scaling inside pipes — restricts flow, increases pressure drop
  • Geyser and boiler failure — scale insulates heating elements, burns them out
  • RO membrane fouling — calcium carbonate scale blocks membranes prematurely
  • Washing machine damage — scale deposits in drum and heating element
  • Less soap lather — calcium reacts with soap, wastes detergent
  • Dry, itchy skin and rough, dull hair after bathing
  • White spots on dishes, tiles, and bathroom fittings
  • Cooling tower scaling in HVAC and industrial systems
  • Reduced lifespan of plumbing fittings and valves

What a water softener solves

After softening:

  • Pipes stay clear — no scale, full flow maintained
  • Geysers and boilers run efficiently — up to 30% energy saved
  • RO membranes last longer — lower replacement frequency and OPEX
  • 50% less soap and detergent needed
  • Noticeably softer skin and silkier hair
  • Spotless dishes, tiles, and sanitary ware
  • Cooling towers and HVAC coils stay clean
  • Extended lifespan across all water-using appliances

India's groundwater TDS and hardness levels vary significantly by region. Our engineers test your source water before recommending a softener model and resin specification.

Process

How ion exchange water softening works

  1. 01

    Step 01

Hard water enters the resin tank

Incoming water — from bore well, municipal supply, or industrial source — passes into a pressure vessel packed with cation exchange resin beads. The resin is pre-charged with sodium (Na⁺) ions.

  2. 02

    Step 02

Ion exchange — calcium and magnesium removed

As hard water flows through the resin bed, calcium (Ca²⁺) and magnesium (Mg²⁺) ions in the water are attracted to the resin and exchanged for sodium ions. The water leaving the tank is now soft — hardness ions have been removed and replaced with harmless sodium.

  3. 03

    Step 03

Service cycle — soft water to point of use

Softened water is distributed to all downstream uses: plumbing, appliances, boilers, cooling towers, RO plant feed, or process equipment. The softener operates continuously during the service cycle with no interruption to supply.

  4. 04

    Step 04

Regeneration cycle — resin restored automatically

When the resin becomes saturated with calcium and magnesium ions, the control valve initiates a regeneration cycle. A brine solution (sodium chloride salt dissolved in water) backwashes through the resin, flushing out the accumulated hardness minerals and recharging the resin with fresh sodium ions. The spent brine is directed to drain. Timer-based or demand-initiated regeneration (DIR) — based on actual water usage rather than fixed intervals — minimises salt and water consumption during regeneration.

Features

Engineered for Indian water conditions

  • High-capacity cation exchange resin

Premium strong acid cation resin with high ion exchange capacity and long service life — selected for India's typically high hardness and TDS groundwater conditions.

  • Automatic demand-initiated regeneration (DIR)

Commercial and industrial units regenerate based on actual water volume processed — not on a fixed timer. This minimises salt consumption, water wastage, and regeneration frequency.

  • Duplex / twin-tank configuration

Hotels, hospitals, and industrial plants cannot tolerate interrupted supply. Duplex softeners keep one vessel in service while the other regenerates — true 24/7 soft water without any downtime.

  • Fully automatic multi-port control valve

Motorised or manually operated multi-port valves handle service, backwash, brine draw, slow and fast rinse, and refill cycles automatically through a single controller interface.

  • RO membrane protection

The most common cause of RO membrane fouling in India is calcium carbonate scaling from hard feed water. A softener upstream of any RO plant significantly extends membrane life and reduces OPEX. A water softener upstream of your RO plant protects membranes from calcium carbonate scaling.

  • Protects boilers and geysers

Scale inside boiler tubes and geyser elements insulates the heating surface, forcing more energy consumption and accelerating burnout. Soft water eliminates scale and can reduce boiler energy consumption by up to 30%.

  • Reduces soap and detergent consumption

Hard water reacts with soap to form calcium scum — wasting detergent and leaving residue on laundry, dishes, and skin. Soft water allows soap to lather fully with up to 50% less detergent required.

  • Compatible with bore well and municipal supply

Unicare softeners are designed and sized for Indian source water — whether bore well water with very high hardness (600–1500+ mg/L), or municipal supply with moderate hardness (200–400 mg/L).

  • AMC and resin replacement support

Annual maintenance contracts cover resin inspection, brine tank cleaning, control valve servicing, inlet/outlet hardness verification, and salt replenishment guidance — with India-wide service coverage.

Applications

Where Unicare water softeners are specified

Residential building utility area with water treatment equipment

Residential apartments & villas

Hard water damages geysers, washing machines, and overhead tanks. Society-level or flat-level softeners protect all appliances and deliver noticeably softer water for bathing and washing.

Hotel utility and hospitality infrastructure requiring softened water

Hotels & resorts

Laundry, kitchen, swimming pools, cooling towers, and boilers all demand consistently soft water. Duplex commercial softeners ensure uninterrupted supply across peak occupancy periods.

Hospital engineering services area and process water infrastructure

Hospitals & healthcare

Autoclaves, sterilisation equipment, dialysis water pre-treatment, and HVAC cooling systems require low-hardness water. Our softeners are sized and documented for facility compliance audits.

Food processing plant with stainless process equipment

Food & beverage processing

Brewing, dairy, beverage, and packaged food plants need process water that meets strict hardness specifications. Industrial softeners with online monitoring and documentation suit FSSAI compliance requirements.

Industrial utility plant with boiler and cooling infrastructure

Industrial boilers & cooling towers

Scale in boiler tubes and cooling tower fill packing reduces efficiency and causes costly shutdowns. Industrial duplex softeners with PLC control maintain consistent hardness removal at high flow rates.

RO pre-treatment system with filtration and membrane train

RO plant pre-treatment

Unicare recommends a softener upstream of any RO system fed by hard bore well water. Reducing feed hardness below 100 mg/L protects membranes from calcium carbonate scaling and significantly extends membrane replacement intervals.

FAQs

Water softener — common questions

1What is a water softener and how does it work?
A water softener is a device that removes calcium and magnesium ions — the minerals that cause water hardness — from water using a process called ion exchange. Hard water passes through a vessel packed with resin beads charged with sodium ions. The calcium and magnesium ions in the water swap with the sodium ions on the resin, leaving the water soft. The resin is periodically recharged using a salt brine solution during a regeneration cycle.
2How do I know if I have hard water?
Common signs of hard water include white scale deposits on taps, geysers, and bathroom tiles; soap that does not lather well; dry and itchy skin after bathing; rough hair and laundry; and frequent geyser or washing machine failures. A simple water hardness test or TDS meter reading can confirm the degree of hardness. Contact us for a free water quality assessment.
3Does a water softener affect drinking water?
Water softeners exchange calcium and magnesium for sodium. The resulting water is safe for most uses, but people on low-sodium diets or those with specific health conditions should consult a doctor before drinking softened water. For drinking purposes, we recommend placing the softener upstream of an RO purifier — the RO removes the added sodium along with other dissolved solids.
4What size water softener do I need?
Sizing depends on your source water hardness, daily water consumption, peak flow rate, and the application (residential, commercial, industrial). Our engineers assess your source water report and site requirements to recommend the correct resin volume, vessel size, and regeneration frequency. Contact us with your water analysis report for a recommendation.
5How often does a water softener need regeneration?
Regeneration frequency depends on water hardness, resin volume, and daily throughput. Timer-based systems regenerate at fixed intervals (typically every 3–7 days). Demand-initiated regeneration (DIR) systems regenerate only when the resin is actually exhausted — based on a flow meter — which saves salt and water significantly.
6What salt is used and how often does it need refilling?
Water softener salt (sodium chloride — common industrial grade or food grade salt) is used to prepare the brine solution for regeneration. Salt consumption depends on regeneration frequency and resin volume. For a typical residential unit regenerating once a week, a 25–50 kg bag of salt lasts 4–8 weeks. AMC plans include salt consumption guidance.
7Can a water softener protect my RO plant membranes?
Yes — this is one of the most valuable applications of a water softener in India. Hard bore well water (above 300 mg/L hardness) causes rapid calcium carbonate scaling on RO membranes, reducing permeate flow and increasing operating pressure. Installing a softener upstream of the RO feed line eliminates this scaling risk and can extend membrane life by 2–3 times.
8Do you provide installation and AMC for water softeners?
Yes. Unicare provides end-to-end water softener delivery: source water assessment, model selection, supply, installation, commissioning, and annual maintenance contracts (AMC). AMC covers resin inspection, control valve servicing, brine tank cleaning, inlet/outlet hardness verification, and salt guidance — with India-wide coverage.
9What is the difference between simplex and duplex water softeners?
A simplex softener has one resin vessel. During the regeneration cycle (typically 1–2 hours), soft water supply is interrupted. A duplex (twin-tank) softener has two vessels: one in service, one in regeneration. When one vessel is exhausted, the other seamlessly takes over — providing continuous 24/7 soft water with zero interruption. Duplex systems are essential for hotels, hospitals, and industrial processes.
10What is the typical life of a water softener resin?
High-quality strong acid cation resin typically lasts 5–8 years under normal operating conditions. Resin life is reduced by exposure to chlorine (from municipal supply), iron fouling, or organic fouling. Our AMC program includes annual resin assessment and replacement recommendation when degradation is detected.
