KLD Full Form in STP — Meaning, LPCD Conversion & Practical Sizing
KLD means kilolitres per day; LPCD is litres per capita per day. Formulas, CPHEEO norms table, and links to worked STP sizing examples for India.
If you landed here from a search for KLD full form, you are probably sizing a sewage treatment plant or reviewing a consent document. In Indian water and wastewater projects, KLD means kilolitres per day — the standard unit for daily sewage flow to an STP. LPCD means litres per capita per day, the planning norm for how much sewage one person generates. Together they are the language of CPHEEO water balances, MPCB applications, and vendor nameplates.
This guide explains both units, shows how to convert LPCD to KLD, and links to worked examples so your consent capacity matches real occupancy — not a guess from built-up area.
KLD full form in STP and water treatment
KLD = Kilolitres per Day (also written kiloliters per day). One kilolitre is 1,000 litres. If a society generates 172,800 litres of sewage in 24 hours, that is 172.8 KLD. Consent forms, STP badges, and O&M contracts in India almost always express design capacity in KLD.
Do not confuse KLD with:
- KLD in finance (Kuwaiti Dinar) — irrelevant to STP.
- MLD — megalitres per day (1 MLD = 1,000 KLD), used for city-scale plants.
LPCD full form and role in sizing
LPCD = Litres Per Capita per Day of sewage (or sometimes water supply, depending on the table). CPHEEO planning manuals publish water-supply LPCD by land use; sewage is often taken as 80% of water supply when you only have supply figures.
| Land use | Water supply (LPCD) | Sewage @ 80% (LPCD) |
|---|---|---|
| Residential flats | 135 | 108 |
| Hotels (with restaurant) | 180 | 144 |
| Hospitals (with laundry) | 450 | 360 |
| Offices / schools (day use) | 45 | 36 |
LPCD to KLD — conversion formula
Daily sewage (litres) = Population × LPCD (sewage)
KLD = Daily sewage ÷ 1,000
Example: 1,600 residents × 108 LPCD = 172,800 L/day = 172.8 KLD. Add 10–15% for peaking, then round up to a standard plant size (e.g. 200 KLD).

What does 200 KLD mean?
200 KLD means the STP is designed to treat up to 200,000 litres of sewage per day on average. It does not mean every hour receives an equal share — morning peaks in residential towers can be 2.5–3× the average hourly flow unless equalization is designed properly. See 200 KLD STP meaning & sizing guide for when that size fits Indian projects.
KLD in consent vs nameplate vs actual flow
Three numbers often get mixed up:
- Consent KLD — what MPCB/state board approved.
- Nameplate KLD — what the vendor sold.
- Metered influent — what actually arrives (should be logged).
Auditors compare these during CTO renewals. Size honestly at consent stage; do not under-declare to save fees and hope biology absorbs the gap.
